1. Technical Skills Development

1.1       Describe areas for development in your current knowledge, understanding and skills

My current knowledge in film is quite standard I believe with some aspects of experience. This mainly stems from a UAL film course I did where I gained knowledge and practical experience in film and television. I partook in work experience activities such as Sheffield Docfest and capturing live games. My role at docfest was being a production assistant and festival runner. My tasks there included helping the production team setup exhibition workshops and booking in delegates. My current interests are producing and sound design because I am interested and enjoy those crafts.

Here is some of my past work:

I want to study Producing or maybe Sound Design. This is because I enjoy these and I have improved on them throughout my time learning film. I want to gain experience and knowledge of getting into the industry, as well as meeting peers to collaborate with and tutors from which to learn. I would like to improve my skills in film by making projects in groups. This is because I can learn as I go along and work on a project which I think is better than not making a film/project. I would like to improve my knowledge of film by doing activities related to it and listening to lectures/classes from people established in film. I have a plans to work in film by going doing further courses and making films in crews.

1.2       Take a role in the production of a short film

My production role is Producer. The planning work I will need to do is concept development, reconnaissance and risk assessment. In pre-production I will go through the script with the screenwriter, create schedules, find locations, gather equipment and materials, signatures from talent if required. In production I will gather the resources, organize and help the crew on set if anything goes wrong. I will make sure the production runs on schedule and on budget. In post production I will continue to adhere to the schedule I have set and ensure that the editing phase has been successful.

The main skills I would need for my role are problem solving skills, creative skills. and team working skills. The equipment I will need for the production are: Camera, tripod, gimbal, sound recorder, microphones, lenses/filters and a computer. I will need word document to create schedules and risk assessments. I will need editing software for our editor to edit our film. For the production we will need props and a clear and quiet street location for exterior filming. I will need to source actors as well. I will source actors by putting up a casting call online or sourcing from friends I know.

1.3       Gain feedback on how you performed your role

”You got all the resources we needed which was a relief on shooting day. I liked the way you organized the set and made sure we were all on schedule by reminding us. You prepared well for the shoot”

”A challenge we faced was copyright of a beer brand. This was a problem since we had to convey to the audience it was beer, so we had it partly covered.”

”You worked collaboratively with us. You helped me with the cinematography every now and then and reminded me of continuity errors on shoot day.”

”You could have developed your communication with the director.”

1.4     Review own technical skills and use of equipment

In my role I sourced actors, equipment, props, locations and any other miscellaneous. In post production I supported the editor and made sure the risk assessment was adhered to. I very much agree with the feedback I was given from my crew. The reason for this is the feedback goes with what I previously assumed I had to improve. In production I think I carried my role to the best of my ability with the help of a mentor. My strengths were that I could create documents and carry them out, as well as getting all the resources needed. My challenges were establishing a clear communication between crew members on filming day.

My technical skills developed in blocking a scene for the first time – I learned how to block as scene between two actors which increased the smoothness of filming that scene greatly. My knowledge and understanding has grown further as I was given the experience on hand. I didn’t know fully the responsibilities of a producer and the on-set process before starting the course. I had previous understanding about production documents such as risk assessments. However I was never introduced about call sheets before starting the course which was good to learn in regards to its importance.

  1. Hi Zak, please can you make sure you are answering this as a paragraph. It’s great to use links, but can you introduce them and tell us what they are. I think it would be useful if you removed the prompt questions to see if your answers flow coherently without them. Could you speak more in depth about what you learned at Doc Fest and what you hope to gain from the film academy?
