3.1 Explain the importance of teamwork when working on a film production
The different teams in my production are the sound team, camera, directing, scripting, producing and editing. These teams prepared and developed the pre production phase by bouncing ideas from each other mainly in concept development. Therefrom the producer and scriptwriter worked together to list props and actor details for the film. The sound recorder researched and learned the skills in that department. The cinematographer worked with the screenwriter to determine shots and angles. The producer sourced actors and created the necessary documents i.e call sheets. In post production the editing department was given a debrief of the film from the director so they had an idea of how they should work on the edit. It is crucial for the different teams in a production to not only work well but enjoy working on a production otherwise they will loose morale and quit. For instance in my team, there was a point in the editing that the editors and director wasn’t sure what else they could do to improve so everyone watched it separately and gave feedback on the inconsistencies they ran into. If there isn’t good team work and ethos then the members will struggle to make a film and overall it wouldn’t be a good experience for the actors involved. An extreme case is health and safety measures – bad team work can cause mishaps and confusion on set and it might be a health and safety hazard.
An instance on where my team could have performed better on our film production was in the first scene we filmed, between the director and cinematographer there was really confusing communication in regards to what shot/angle would be next for the film. This left the actor in an uncomfortable situation and since the director was unsure of how to direct the actor thereafter, the actor became unsure of what to do because of the dilemma between the director and cinematographer.
3.2 Identify the qualities needed to work well with others
I would say the top qualities for a good working team on a production is everyone having the same image for the film. That way everyone will be able to work together cohesively. In pre production and concept development I made sure to reassure the crew what the story is and how it will look in production as to avoid any hiccups. However this did not go completely to plan in production. In production I tried my best to remind the cinematographer and director of the shot list as I was in charge of scheduling the shoot. This kept us in align with our pre production work and made sure that we weren’t going off in a tangent.
Good timekeeping – I made sure to schedule a time suitable for the actors to rehearse and the production team to setup and revise shooting scripts.
Being reliable – I brought in all the props for the shoot as well as actors which was my responsibility.
Sharing ideas – In concept we were bouncing ideas from each other and the scriptwriter developed them into a screenplay.
Good communication – In production I communicated clearly between our mentor and the different departments such as sound and camera.
Safe working – I followed good health and safety procedures on set with my risk assessment.
3.3 Describe how you worked with others collaboratively on your film production
As producer I helped the various departments of the production such as cinematography or the writer with any props or equipment they needed. I played more of a supporting role within my crew on all stages of production. One case where I showed good team working skills is in production; I welcomed the actors and gave them a brief overview of their role and what they would expect to happen on the day. The main problem I needed to overcome was the shot list wasn’t entirely clear because the director had to go on what they had on the spot and improvise from there. I could improve by developing a clear shooting script.
