4. Working Practices and Legislation

Health and Safety Practices

Health and safety is extremely important when working in productions because the people involved will get hurt without it. If the cast and crew or another people get harmed in producing a film it will affect their lives either injuring them or worse. So it very important on productions to have health and safety measures. The key safety issues in film are physical injuries – actors might get hurt performing falls or stunts. Other issues are with crew members as they might get hurt setting up electrical equipment or sharp objects. There are issues with safety in regards to location because of weather and terrain. I applied good health and safety when making our film by creating a risk assessment and filming in safe locations away from harsh weather. At one point in the shoot, there was a tall piece of lighting equipment that nearly toppled down near the crew. I used the risk assessment to assess the risk almost before it happened and we got it out of the way. I cleared any objects from the set that would be a hazard to the cast and crew.

Here is a screenshot of my risk assessment. This document is very important as it outlines the key hazards for the cast and crew and it explains how to control and minimize the risk.

Copyright

Copyright is the exclusive right given to the creator of a creative work to reproduce the work, usually for a limited time. The creative work may be in a literary, artistic or musical form. Copyright law exists to protect the original expression of an idea in the form of a creative work, but not the idea itself. If we were to use copyrighted material in our work we could face fines or legal action. To make sure we don’t infringe copyright on our work we will need to shoot film originally and have rights to any material such as licensed music or royalty free music. Copyright has affected our film because in our edit we had to use royalty free music. Also on production we couldn’t include a close up of a beer brand to avoid copyright.
